10 tasks we do in the summer in the garden

July 8, 2022

Summer is the warmest time of the year and a pleasant period of relaxation, where we enjoy the house and the garden with friends and family.

During the summer months of June, July and August, gardening tasks can be more difficult as the temperatures and heat are high, but they are absolutely necessary to keep our garden beautiful and green.

We start with waterings that need a lot of frequency, as our plants may suffer from a lack of water due to the heat.

We take care of the plants and observe carefully for the appearance of insects and diseases that can create significant problems during the summer.

In the summer we harvest the fruits of the spring plantings, having a wide variety of fresh fruits and wonderful seasonal vegetables.

We are continuing the plantings with late vegetables that will give us production in the fall and we are making a seedbed to prepare the vegetables that we will plant in the fall.

So let’s look in detail at summer gardening tasks to make a good planning so that we can enjoy healthy plants, abundant flowering and lots of delicious fruits in a wonderful summer garden.

1. We regularly water the plants in the garden and in pots

Due to the dry-thermal conditions that prevail this season, our plants need very frequent and abundant watering, in order to cope with the high temperatures, especially during the hot season. We prefer to water our plants early in the morning or at dusk and avoid watering and wetting the leaves during the midday hours.

We carefully water vegetables and fruit trees at regular intervals to avoid various problems that may occur, such as leaf and flower drop, as well as fruit cracking such as bursting pomegranates and browning of the underside of the fruit in tomatoes and peppers .

Why do pomegranates burst and how do we deal with it?

Before we leave for summer vacation, we take care of watering our garden especially if there is no good neighbor, friend or relative to water our plants while we are away.

In this case, it is more than necessary to install automatic watering with a scheduler and a drip irrigation system in our garden and in our balcony pots.

2. Protect the plants from intense sun and heat

In summer, the sun is very intense and hot, especially at noon. This results in widespread drying of the leaves of fruit trees and ornamental plants, as well as burns on vegetables.

To protect vegetables and ornamental plants, we can place a special sun protection net over the plants. In other words, to create a network garden that significantly protects the vegetation and fruiting of our plants from the strong rays of the sun.

Alternatively, foliar spraying with zeolite, kaolin or algae extract helps protect plants in heat, intense midday sun and high temperatures.

3. We harvest fresh summer vegetables from our garden

During the summer we harvest a wide variety of vegetables to make cool salads and delicious summer recipes!

We take the onions out of the ground and dry them to store them for the next months. Continuing with the potatoes we harvest them and dust them with Thuringia bacillus during storage to keep them free from caterpillars.

4. We enjoy a wide variety of delicious summer fruits

The summer months offer us a wide variety of favorite fruits. From our vegetable garden, we will also taste wonderful delicious strawberries, aromatic melons and refreshing watermelons.

How do we choose good watermelons?

In the middle of summer, we will taste delicious juicy summer fruits such as apricots, peaches, nectarines, pears, cherries, figs and apples.

From the bed and the vine, we harvest several wonderful early table grape varieties, such as the wonderful white-fruited Sultanina and the black Attiki grape variety that have a distinct flavor.

5. Plant late summer vegetables

In the spring we do the first plantings of vegetables and we continue to plant the vegetable garden during the summer to have a longer duration in the production of vegetables.

By staggered planting of the vegetable garden, we can late plant various summer vegetables such as tomato, pepper, eggplant, cucumber, squash and beans to have production throughout the summer and into late autumn.

At this time we must be careful and plant our vegetables at dusk so that our new plants are not stressed by the intense heat and the hot midday sun.

In southern regions of the country, where the winter is mild, without severe frost and low temperatures, the production of late plantings of late summer vegetables can last well into the winter months.

6. We are preparing seedbeds for autumn vegetables

In the summer season, we start creating a seedbed for autumn vegetables with our favorite varieties.

We use special potting soil for sowing vegetables and prepare seedbeds for autumn vegetables such as growing cabbage, growing broccoli and growing cauliflower.

How to make a vegetable seedbed

We prefer seeds from local efficient varieties with quality characteristics that are well adapted to the soil and climate conditions of our region.

The plants from our nursery will be ready in early autumn to be transplanted into our garden or into pots on the balcony.

7. We protect our vegetables from insects and diseases

The high temperatures of summer cause an increase in attacks by diseases, insects and the tetranych and we must be on the lookout to control our plants.

We carefully observe our plants for characteristic signs of spider mite infestation, such as silky cobwebs that form on the affected parts of flowers and leaves and burning on the leaves.

Dealing with tetranychos in the garden

If the leaves of cucumber, squash, cantaloupe and watermelon stick together, it is a symptom of the mealybug and mealy bug that weakens the plants.

If we see whiteness on the leaves, like flour, it is certain that they have been affected by the powdery mildew disease.

Small holes in tomato fruits are an indication of attack by the tuta insect, while another problem is stink bugs, which cause yellow spots on the outside of the tomato and corky areas on the inside, resulting in the fruits not ripening well and not being eaten.

To protect our plants from insects and diseases, we supply various ecological preparations that are approved to be used in organic cultivation such as sulphur, thiochalcine, Thuringia bacillus, natural pyrethrin and potassium salts.

Alternatively, in cases of mild infestation and on a preventive level, we can use homemade materials to make improvised ecological preparations with green soap, baking soda, milk, vinegar and cayenne pepper.

8. We take care of the ornamental plants of the garden and the balcony

During the summer, we remove the dried leaves and dried flowers from the ornamental plants to strengthen the vegetation of the plants and give us new lush flowering that will last until autumn.

After removing the dried leaves and flowers of ornamental plants, it is important to spray them with summer mulch to protect against troublesome insects such as cotton bollworm, mealybug and mealybug.

How to deal with cotton in plants

To enhance the flowering of the plants and give us many beautiful flowers in late summer, but also a late flowering in the autumn, we add a complete water-soluble fertilizer rich in potassium and phosphorus.

9. We deal with the daco in the olives

During the summer season, the olive borer attacks our olive trees, both for table and oil-making olive varieties, causing significant damage.

We can carry out biological control of the olive borer, using special traps for borer, spraying the foliage of the olive trees with kaolin or carrying out bait sprays with approved ecological preparations.

Treatment of the olive pit

For the protection of the olive tree, it is important to consult the observation traps for the weevil that we have in our field, so that when the population increases we carry out the appropriate sprays.

We have to bear in mind that in hot weather, when temperatures exceed 35°C, the populations of the dako become fixed as they do not multiply, so we do not need to do any intervention.

10. We protect our garden from fire

During the summer months, the risk of fire is high and it is necessary to do some preventive work that protects our garden from fire.

To protect against fire, we clean and remove dry grasses in our garden in time, but also around the fence of our house and our holiday home. In addition, we prune dry branches from the trees and remove them immediately so that they do not become flammable raw material in the event of a fire.
